Parktown North, Johannesburg

Light Weight Steel House

Karpinski Design designed and built a lightweight steel house within 5 massive urban trees. This building technology is not common in South Africa and stems from New Zealand where labour is expensive and there is a lack of natural building materials. The house comprises a large living and kitchen area, 2 main en-suite bedrooms, a guest WC and a raised loft bedroom. The property also houses an adjoining studio for the perfect work from home scenario. Extensive Rhodesian teak desks connect all these spaces to the large garden and landscape. All of this is under roof at 145 Sq M. The house took 6 months to build, and it sits beautifully in this micro-forest in the middle of Johannesburg.
